Question:
In a letter to the NY Times in 2001, you stated that you read everything sent to you, which I assume is a great task. Do you have days when you just can't face another submission?
Answer:
I like to go to work every day, since it's
so much like play. And I'm lucky that I don't get so many submissions
each day that it becomes an unbearable chore. The hope that I'll find
something wonderful spurs me on. I'm only sorry I have to tell so many
writers I haven't found their work "wonderful" enough for me. That's
pretty harsh, and has more to do with me and what I think ZYZZYVA needs
than the work itself. I admire the tenacity of writers.
